Our first meeting for the year will be on Friday 18th March at Mead Hall Flinders Street Baptist, at 4.30pm. A pizza tea with salad will probably be a good idea, and a donation would be helpful to pay for the meal.
John Walker has sent the below topics for both the March and May meetings. The May meeting will be on Saturday 28th May 9.30am to 12 noon at Mead Hall, Flinders Street Baptist. There will be a light morning tea and a donation would be appreciated.
The topic for the March meeting is ‘Twin Pulpits: Three early SA Baptist pastors who became journalists’. I’ll be presenting. The talk is based on research I’m currently doing on early SA Baptists. They are: Marcus Collisson who for a short period was a pastor of Adelaide’s first Baptist church but later converted to Roman Catholicism, James Allen who was the pastor of the first Baptist church in Adelaide and proprietor of the Adelaide Times newspaper, and John Medway Day who was an early minister at Mount Gambier and Kapunda and went on to be leading journalist and editor at the Register and a prominent social reformer and labour movement activist.
The topic for the May History Festival meeting is ‘The Changing Baptist Sunday’. There will be several contributors.
