Ministry Opportunities in Our Movement
As you read this article look to your right…now look to your left. Is there someone sitting near you who you think might have the skills and heart to serve our movement of churches through involvement on a board? Will you encourage them to consider this as a possible ministry opportunity? Indeed, might that person be you?
The Boards of Baptist Churches of SA (Assembly Board) and Baptist Care are both volunteer boards that meet monthly to pray, discuss and decide matters that will impact the lives of the communities we serve. There are vacancies currently on each board and appropriate skills and experiences are being sought to add to those already present. Becoming a board member includes a discernment process and if you might be interested in finding out more please contact, in the first instance, Mike Mills at the Baptist Centre office.
Julie Lawrie – Baptist Care Board
I’ve been married to my best friend for twenty years and am the proud mum/taxi service to two boys aged eleven and thirteen. I have over twenty years in the field of business and marketing, and currently run my own consultancy.
I’ve been challenged by God to use some of my spiritual gifts (admin, discernment) and my professional skills to live out Acts 1:8 and Matthew 25:35-40. I believe that good governance can be a great witness, and I also care deeply about extending Christ’s love and compassion by serving children, youth, those at-risk or marginalised, through purposeful community service. Serving on the board of Baptist Care gives me an opportunity to contribute through my skills, passion and faith for those on the margins of our society.
James Whalland – Assembly Board
Hi, my name is James Whalland. I have been a member of the Assembly board since 2015. I am a father of two wonderful (but sometimes challenging) young children, husband to a wonderful wife Tanya and we are fortunate to attend Edwardstown Baptist church. My time on the board has been one of great growth, both administratively but also spiritually.
I was somewhat hesitant when first asked to consider being on board, with me asking the question to myself ‘what could I bring?’….well through the grace of our great God he has shown me that even my professional vocation of a corporate risk / insurance broker has a place and value in the kingdom (and the board). I now chair the Audit & Risk Committee.
I am fortunate to be part of a board of outstanding people. We all have a shared purpose of doing all it can to ensure that the people within our great state have the opportunity to encounter God through focusing on the big picture / direction whilst equipping and assisting local Baptist churches wherever possible in their local mission.
Allan Packer – Baptist Care Board
I’m a husband and father with four children and four grandchildren, and I’m approaching the end of a 40+ year career in IT. My wife and I have been members at Parkside Baptist for many years.
For me, serving on the board of Baptist Care has been both humbling and stretching. It’s been a growth experience to address the opportunities and challenges alongside a group of capable and like-minded people.
There are so many in SA who desperately need practical love and support in their struggle to find a way forward in their lives. Providing governance probably isn’t the most obvious or glamorous way of responding to the disadvantaged. Nevertheless, for those of us on the board it offers a unique way of expressing the heart of God (Gen. 41) while responding to his calling.
