A Mission from a Message: Keep faith, remain in God’s love and show mercy to others
…Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life. Be merciful to those who doubt… – Jude 21-22
This was the powerful message that Baptist Care SA’s Manager of Homelessness and Aboriginal Services, Ken Henderson shared when he visited Saddleworth Baptist Church in March.
Ken, a Social Worker who has also worked in pastoral ministry, has worked for Baptist Care SA for over 20 years and says that without the hope and possibilities offered by Jesus, the work that he has done with traumatised people experiencing poverty and/or chronic homelessness, “is just social work”.
“And for me, that’s not enough,” he adds.
Ken told the congregation that as Christians we are to build ourselves up in faith by praying in the Holy Spirit, maintaining ourselves in the love of God and by looking out for each other and being clear about apostolic truth.
“What I hope I’m doing in my job is demonstrating the ‘in-breaking’ of the kingdom of God into the lives of those around me, both the staff and the clients…if we have built ourselves up in the faith, then we can also show mercy to those around us.”
“(At Baptist Care SA) we have a mission because of a message. What the Church gives through the message of Jesus and what Baptist Care SA brings through its mission is the ability to connect with people who have lost the ability to connect with others.”
Saddleworth Baptist Church has generously supported the mission of Baptist Care SA for over a decade. 100 km north of Adelaide, in a township of just 400 people, it is humbling to comprehend the significant impact that this tiny congregation has had on the work that we do and we are so grateful for their contribution over the years. We would like to thank Saddleworth Baptist for partnering with us, and for their most recent donations of goods and funds towards helping the struggling South Australians who visit our WestCare Centre.
If your congregation is interested in finding out more about the work that we do or if you would like to have a Baptist Care SA representative speak at your Church, please contact our Church Support Team on T: 08 8177 4905.
The ‘On Earth’ Biblical Justice Study Series available to churches as part of Baptist Care SA month in August includes specific information on our homelessness services and how you can engage with us in this important work.
